It is believed that birthday celebrations originated in the Roman Empire and the origins of birth flowers date back to these times. The Roman birthday celebrations included honoring their Gods by decorating the altars with flowers. Also, during Roman birthday celebrations family and friends brought gifts including flowers to celebrate the birthday person.

JANUARY - Birth Flower: Carnation
Carnation - Latin Name: Dianthus caryophyllus
The carnation is a beautiful ruffled or lace-like long lasting flower. There are approximately 300 species of carnation. Carnations have a history that dates back more than 2,000 years when they were one of the flowers used in Greek ceremonial crowns.
Meaning of Carnations: the carnation is the "flower of love" & the "flower of the gods", as well as expressing love, carnation express fascination and distinction, with each color conveying an additional meaning:
White Carnations: suggest pure love, good luck and gratitude.
Red Carnations: light red means admiration and dark red conveys a deeper passion of deep love and affection
Pink Carnations: are a symbol of a mother's undying love and also convey a meaning of "I will never forget you"
Purple Carnations: are a symbol of unpredictably, and impulse - whimsical
Yellow Carnations: are a symbol of rejection
There are basically 3 types of carnation that are used by florists.
1. The large flowered blossom features one bloom per flower.
2. Mini Carnations also known as Spray Carnations, small blossoms in several bunches
3. Dwarf Carnations are several smaller flowers on one bloom
Carnations are frequently used in floral arrangements, and bouquets. They are a popular flower for boutonnieres and corsages as they last for several hours without water.
